After many years of lake living in a well-loved cottage, the homeowners began experiencing moisture and mold issues that made it clear the home could no longer support the way they wanted to live. Rather than continuing to repair a structure nearing the end of its life, they chose to build a new home thoughtfully designed around both their current lifestyle and future needs.
As a retired couple, long-term livability was an important part of the design. The home includes a primary suite on the main floor, along with a second primary suite upstairs, allowing flexibility as their needs evolve over time. The goal was to create a home where they could continue living comfortably and independently for years to come.
A central feature of the home is the Tulikivi wood stove, a Finnish soapstone heater that stores and radiates heat, offering long-lasting warmth and creating a natural focal point within the living space.
Throughout the home, our team carefully tailored each detail to the homeowners. Cabinetry in the kitchen, pantry, and laundry room was designed taller than standard to better suit their height, while a dedicated walk-in pantry provides generous storage for their ceramics and dishware collection. It truly became a one-of-a-kind build designed specifically for this Richland family.
Outdoor living was equally important to the overall design and to the family. A wraparound porch on the main level creates inviting spaces for entertaining, grilling, and gathering with family and friends, while a screened porch off the upper primary suite provides a quiet place to enjoy sunset views over the lake.
The project was designed as a complete reimagining of lake living, balancing comfort, durability, and long-term functionality. The new home replaced the original cottage with a structure designed to better withstand the lake environment while supporting the homeowners through every stage of life.
By combining aging-in-place principles, highly personalized design details, and warm architectural features, the finished home feels welcoming, timeless, and deeply connected to the way the homeowners want to live.
