Located within a beautiful historic home in Kalamazoo, this kitchen remodel focused on preserving the character of the original architecture while transforming the space into something brighter, more functional, and better suited to modern living. Although the home itself had tremendous warmth and charm, the existing kitchen felt dark, enclosed, and disconnected from the rest of the house.
Rather than pursuing a major structural overhaul, the project centered around thoughtful space planning and strategic modifications. By removing two small walls and opening connections between adjacent spaces, we were able to dramatically change how the kitchen feels and functions while still respecting the integrity of the historic home.
The homeowner envisioned a clean, timeless aesthetic centered around natural materials and light. White oak base cabinetry was paired with white upper cabinetry and light countertops to create balance, warmth, and brightness throughout the room. New tile flooring was carefully selected to tie the palette together while complementing both the old character of the house and the updated kitchen design.
A defining feature of the space is the custom plaster range hood framed by floating white oak shelving, which creates a strong visual focal point while reinforcing the warmth and simplicity of the overall design.
Large windows overlooking the backyard bring natural light deep into the kitchen and strengthen the connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape, helping the room feel open and inviting throughout the day.
The remodel transformed a dark and compartmentalized kitchen into a bright, welcoming space that feels significantly larger without requiring major structural reconstruction. Through thoughtful layout adjustments, carefully selected materials, and attention to architectural balance, the updated kitchen now feels fully integrated with the historic character of the home.
The finished result combines warmth, simplicity, and functionality while preserving the timeless quality that makes the original home so special.
