Kitchen Addition in Kalamazoo
This historic home in Kalamazoo overlooks the golf course at the Kalamazoo Country Club. While the home was full of charm, beautiful architecture, and exceptional interior design curated by the homeowner, the kitchen itself remained small and limiting for the way the family lived and entertained.
After decades in the home raising their family, it became clear that the kitchen needed to function differently while still respecting the character of the house.
The homeowner has an incredible eye for detail, color, and collected design elements, so preserving the personality of the home was an important part of the process. Even the small connector between the garage and the home had a charm and character we wanted to maintain rather than replace.
Rather than trying to force additional function into the existing footprint, we designed an addition that allowed the kitchen to expand naturally into the backyard. The previous kitchen space was transformed into a beverage and gathering area, creating a much more open flow between entertaining, dining, and cooking spaces.
The new kitchen addition provided significantly more workspace, improved storage, and better connection to the outdoor living areas, while still feeling appropriate to the original architecture of the home. We paid careful attention to scale, cabinetry detailing, lighting, and finishes so the new spaces felt layered, warm, and timeless.
The connector space between the garage and house was refreshed while intentionally preserving its original character. Outside, the new patio and landscaping completed the transformation, creating a seamless relationship between the home and backyard gathering spaces.
