Home Addition in Kalamazoo
After many years in her home, the homeowner realized the existing layout no longer supported the way she and her daughter wanted to live. The bedrooms were located on the second floor, requiring daily use of the stairs, which had become increasingly difficult, particularly as she cared for her physically challenged daughter. Her goal was to create a more comfortable and accessible main-floor living experience while preserving the character of the home she loved.
Working closely with one of our architectural partners, we designed an addition that feels fully integrated with the original structure. The transition between old and new is seamless, to the point that it is difficult to tell where the original home ends and the addition begins.
The project included a new main-floor primary suite, an additional bedroom, expanded pantry space, and a complete kitchen renovation. The kitchen was rebuilt using vertical grain cherry cabinetry designed to complement the home’s existing woodwork and architectural character.
The homeowner also wanted the exterior experience of the home to feel more intentional. We redesigned the front entry with a covered entrance that gives greater presence and arrival to the home, while a private patio and hot tub off the primary suite created a quiet connection to the surrounding landscape.
A defining feature of the home is its use of expansive glass and strong visual connection to the outdoors. That language was continued throughout the addition, allowing the new spaces to feel open to the wooded views and natural surroundings.
The project was carefully planned to improve long-term livability while respecting the original architecture of the home. By relocating key living spaces to the main floor and thoughtfully integrating the addition into the existing structure, the home now functions more comfortably for everyday life without sacrificing character or cohesion.
Through coordinated architectural design, custom millwork, and a strong connection to the surrounding site, the finished home feels unified, intentional, and timeless.
