Deck Renovation Kalamazoo
Tucked into the woods of a Kalamazoo neighborhood, this cedar shake home features dramatic elevated views and a strong architectural presence. Over time, however, the existing deck had deteriorated significantly due to age, constant shade, and prolonged moisture exposure. Portions of the structure had rotted so severely that sections were barricaded off for safety, a serious concern given the deck’s height of nearly 30 feet above grade.
The homeowners decided that if they were going to undertake a major structural repair, they wanted to fully reimagine the outdoor living experience rather than simply replace what was there. Working with a local architect, they designed a screened porch addition that feels as though it has always been part of the original home.

Before construction could begin, an extensive scaffolding system had to be engineered and installed to safely access the elevated structure. Once secured, the deteriorated framing was repaired, new decking installed, and cable railings added to complement the home’s clean architectural lines and wooded setting.
The new screened porch extends the living space of the home during the warmer months, creating a comfortable gathering area with dining space and panoramic views into the surrounding trees. At the outer edge of the deck, suspended high above the forest floor, the experience is both dramatic and peaceful, giving the sensation of floating within the canopy itself.
The project combined structural rehabilitation with a carefully integrated architectural addition. By restoring the deck framing, upgrading the materials, and incorporating modern cable rail systems, the outdoor spaces are now both safe and visually aligned with the character of the home.
The addition of the screened porch transformed the way the homeowners use the property, turning a failing structure into one of the home’s defining features and creating a stronger connection between the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
Hawks Hollow Builders demolished and rebuilt two decks, walkways and a porch on our house, which is 35 feet off the ground in some spots. We were most impressed by three things: (1) the meticulous tracking of every penny and every bit of material through their software, Co-Construct; (2) the honest and friendly team members — Sera, Scott, John, Rich, and Barney; and (3) the incredible craftsmanship. We are absolutely thrilled with everything, from start to finish. Our project turned out beautifully, and we could not be happier. The Hawks Hollow team is the best!
